SCHMIEDEWERKE GRÖDITZ (SWG)

Schmiedewerke Gröditz is producing heavy weight forgings for worldwide clients. It employs 725 people at a turnover of 197 Mio € in 2012. The production is based on a steel plant with a 50t furnace, secondary metallurgy and ingot casting. The annual output of about 120.000t steel per year of ingots is forged at the forging shop with two presses (27 MN and 60 MN). All products get a customized heat treatment and machined if necessary. Several devices are equipped for machining up to 40t forgings.

All products are tested by ultrasonic testing and if necessary mechanical tests as strength, toughness, hardness and microstructure are performed. The main product is tool steel which is further processed at the clients to dies, machine parts or other tools. Another important product group is complex forgings for power generating industry and mechanical engineering. The clients are mainly situated in Europe and Asia and most of the products are singular with special manufacturing and process plans. Although SWG has experiences with all kinds of steel from low-alloyed to high-alloyed CrNiMo steels, the main portion is tool steel with a content of alloying elements.

Main tasks in the project:

  • Definition of the performance requirements of the new steel grade, design and manufacturing of new steel grades, characterization of industrial samples, steel manufacturing for the demonstrator die, analyze of the economic and environmental impacts and dissemination.
  • Coordinator of IPR protection activities.
